Paratrooper boxer Gideon Jonas looking up after Portman Road draw

The 26-year-old serves in the British Army and is based at the Rock Barracks in Woodbridge with the 23 Parachute Engineer Regiment.

Speaking after his 76-76 scored middleweight contest with Sam Gilley, he said: "Three weeks ago I fought against a quality opponent in Jimmy Sains.

"After that I went to watch my mate fight in Scotland, had a few burgers and that, then on the way back down my manager called saying 'you've got a chance to fight Sam Gilley at Portman Road'. I took it with both hands!

"I wanted to work on stuff from the last fight, but time was against me. But, as always, I went in there and gave it my all.

"You never want to draw, you always want to win, but I think it shows progression. From now we'll always be on the trajectory upwards."

Warned by the referee for holding several times in this fight, he said: "It's my style, I like to go in there and have a fight, so sometimes it does get a bit messy. Listen, we'll go back to the drawing board and next time we'll be clean."

He added: "I'm a Para Engineer, a Paratrooper. After Jimmy Sains I jumped out of a plane into Sweden. On Monday I'm off again, to Wales. Hopefully I can keep marrying up the two jobs and, hopefully, one day get a title for the army."
