Trade Idea Sends Dolphins' Jonnu Smith to Join Jaguars' Travis Hunter

Adam Schefter reported earlier this week that the Steelers renewed trade talks with the Dolphins regarding tight end Jonnu Smith. Since then, there's been plenty of ideas of where Smith could end up and why - that is - if he doesn't remain in Miami.

One of the latest trade ideas came from Bleacher Report's Kurt Benkert, which sent Smith to the Jaguars for a fifth-round pick.

This trade makes a lot of sense for Jacksonville. Trevor Lawrence signed a massive five-year, $275 million contract extension prior to the 2024 season, after throwing for more than 4,000 yards in 2022 and 2023.

However, in a season tainted by injuries, Lawrence played just 10 games in 2024, throwing for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

Two of Lawrence's top three targets, Christian Kirk and Evan Engram, got hurt as well, and combined for just 744 yards. The Jaguars leading receiver ended up being rookie Brian Thomas Jr., who finished a stellar rookie season with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns.

The Jaguars leading tight end was Brenton Strange, who the Jaguars drafted in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Strange, who played behind Engram in his rookie season saw very limited time. In 2024, he started 10 games and played in all 17, collecting 40 receptions for 411 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

With Engram and Kirk gone in 2025, a healthy Lawrence and Travis Etienne, who dealt with a hampering hamstring injury throughout 2024, the Jaguars are looking to put their 4-13 season in the rear view mirror and get back in the win column as they did in Doug Pederson's first two seasons with the team.

Jacksonville began the turnaround by drafting Colorado's two-way star Travis Hunter with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The thought of pairing up Hunter with Thomas Jr. and the addition of Smith is a scary set of weapons for any defense.

A big tight end, who can act as a safety blanket and provide yards after the catch for his quarterback, is the exactly what a young quarterback looking to bounce-back needs.

The addition of Smith would give Lawrence a developing 1,000 yard receiver, a veteran tight end coming off a career year with nearly 90 catches and 900 yards, and the most exciting young player in the NFL at his disposal.

The only question is, will the Dolphins and Smith agree on a restructured contract, or will Miami continue to field calls for the standout tight end.
