Newcastle United's interest in Lille striker Jonathan David may not be dead and buried just yet, with fresh reports from Italy that the Canadian has not decided on a move to Napoli. The Magpies have watched the 25-year-old for some time, with his contract in France due to expire at the end of the month.

The Magpies are in the market for a centre-forward and while David would likely command sizeable wages, the lack of a transfer fee makes him an ideal target. He is able to play across the frontline, and has enjoyed excellent success with Lille last season, particularlty in the the Champions League.

However, his availability alerted a host of top European clubs too, of course, with the striker having his pick of potential next destinations.

It appeared as though he had chose to join Serie A chamions Napoli, but now reports in Italy suggest he has still not made up his mind over his next club - which could open the door for Newcastle.

According to Corriere dello Sport, David would 'prefer' a move to one of Manchester United, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain, with the Premier League remaining an attractive proposition.

Ruben Amorim's Red Devils have already been busy in the summer transfer market, signing Wolves' Matheus Cunha and closing in on a deal for former Newcastle target Bryan Mbeumo. However, they cannot offer David European football next season - something which could be a huge stumbling block.

Newcasrle may not be able to compete with La Liga giants Barca or Champions League winners PSG, but it is by no means certain that either will follow up any interest in David.

The striker has spoken previously about his love of the Premier League, and with United able to offer a place in Europe's elite competition, they may still be in the race.

Eddie Howe appears to be keen on a £50m for Brighton's Joao Pedro as they club look to make their first serious forray into the summer transfer window, but the David saga could run for some time.

David has long admired the Premier Leagie, and said in 2022: "In England, when I watch the matches, everything is full each time. As a player, it motivates you even more.

"I don't know, I think it's possible, very possible [I could play in England one day]. I don't know if I can find myself anywhere other than the Premier League. It could well be the Premier League. It's a very nice atmosphere."
