West Ham United are once again heading into a summer transfer window where they face a major rebuild on their hands.

The Hammers had hoped to kick on and push themselves up towards the European places this time last year, but the appointment of Julen Lopetegui failed miserably and set them back several months in relation to that goal.

They are now facing a situation in which Graham Potter will require several additions to his squad to improve on last season. However, the former Chelsea and Brighton boss also has plenty of players on the books who will need to be shipped out.

All of that comes against a backdrop of PSR concerns, meaning the East London outfit will have to be near-perfect with their business this summer, to ensure there are no decisions that they come to regret further down the line.

Danny Ings is in talks with Wrexham

One way West Ham will be able to potentially free up some money for themselves this summer is by drastically cutting the wage bill.

As a result, it came as no surprise to see them confirm that out of the five senior players whose contracts are due to expire imminently, Michail Antonio is the only man who West Ham haven’t already decided to release.

One of the four who are set to depart E20 is Danny Ings, and the 32-year-old is already in talks with Wrexham over a possible move to the Championship, according to Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph (7 June).

The Red Dragons are set to embark on their first campaign in the top two divisions for 43 years, and have already been linked with several big names who have been cut adrift from Premier League clubs.

Ings is the latest to be touted for a move to North Wales, with the striker’s representatives already understood to have held talks with the club, who are enjoying a rapid rise under the guidance of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Championship move could be good for Ings

Ings’ time at West Ham hasn’t really gone to plan, and it’s stalled his Premier League career somewhat.

The frontman moved to the London Stadium three years ago, but has struggled badly for form, having found the back of the net just five times in all competitions.

With his time at the club now set to draw to a close, it makes sense for him to look at taking a step down to the Championship. At 32, the former Liverpool and Southampton man may not have that long left in the game, and a step down in level could help him rediscover his confidence and his scoring touch.

From Wrexham’s point of view, their attacking ranks are badly in need of a revamp following their promotion.

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer have surely surpassed their level, meaning there could be space for further additions if the duo do depart.

Ings’ recent form in the last few seasons suggests that it could be a gamble to offer him a deal, but with the Red Dragons possessing a healthy budget, it could be a gamble worth taking.

If they could get Ings playing at his best again, he would surely be way too good for the second tier, even at this stage of his career.
