What Danish media have said about Man Utd’s Rasmus Hojlund after performance v Northern Ireland

One Manchester United player who may have been counting down the days to the summer break more than most is Rasmus Hojlund. Despite new manager Ruben Amorim showing faith in him as the team's frontman, Hojlund endured a difficult campaign, finishing the 2024/25 Premier League season with just four goals in 32 appearances as United slumped to a 15th-place finish.

Whether he’ll remain at Old Trafford beyond this transfer window is unclear. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS hierarchy have already added Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to bolster Amorim’s attack, and with United chasing Viktor Gyokeres - who thrived under Amorim at Sporting - rumours of a summer switch to Inter Milan for Hojlund are gaining pace.

There's no doubt that the transfer merry-go-round is set to spin once again, and United fans keeping tabs on Hojlund’s progress may soon become a thing of the past. For now, though, the 22-year-old's focus has shifted to international duty. Hojlund featured for Denmark in their 2-1 win over Northern Ireland on Saturday, playing 66 minutes. While it will come as no surprise to learn that the United striker didn’t get on the scoresheet, the Danish media have offered their assessments of his overall performance.

The Red Devils forked out £72 million to prize Hojlund away from Atalanta in 2023, and he initially hit the ground running - ending his debut campaign as United’s top scorer. But last season, the Dane’s fire fizzled out.

His confidence seemed to vanish without any trace, and judging by the chatter surrounding his latest international cameo, he once again drew a blank as it was Gustav Isaksen and Christian Eriksen who got the job done for Denmark. See Hojlund's match statistics below:

His statistics underline the lack of any redeeming qualities in his performance, and the Danish media were rightly critical after the final whistle. Hojlund was substituted for debutant Mathias Kvistgaarden in the 66th minute, and in a live blog covering the match, Tipsbladet remarked:

“To be a little harsh, Mathias Kvistgaarden has already had a greater impact in 30 seconds than Rasmus Hojlund had in 65 minutes.”

Meanwhile, DR gave Danish football fans a chance to vote for the player ratings, with Hojlund averaging a score of just 2/10, which was the lowest of any player on the home side. Sport TV2 also scored Hojlund a 2/10, criticising the striker:

“Uha, uha. Hojlund didn’t succeed at anything. Seemed frustrated and made too many obvious free kicks. He seemed affected by the situation at Manchester United.”

Campo handed Hojlund a slightly nicer 3/10 rating for his performance, and wrote: “It’s nice to give Hojlund a 3-pointer. But frustration has been wearing him down – all season. Stupid free kicks, protests and no lucky finishes. Practice – come on, Hojlund.”

For United fans, Hojlund’s 13-touch outings are becoming a familiar - and frustrating - part of the weekly routine. His crisis of confidence shows no signs of easing, and it’s looking increasingly like a clean break might serve both sides best. A fresh start elsewhere could give the Dane a chance to rediscover his spark, much like Scott McTominay, Antony, and Marcus Rashford have managed to do in their own ways over the past year.
