Ex-Manchester United player Angel Gomes is on the verge of a surprising move to Marseille, linking up with one-time teammate Mason Greenwood. The young English midfielder's contract was set to run out this coming summer.
He had sparked rumours about a possible return to Old Trafford, and there was also interest from Premier League sides Tottenham and West Ham. But Gomes has decided to take his talents elsewhere.
According to RMC Sport, he is on the brink of signing with the French giants, who have offered him a three-year deal at the Stade Velodrome. Gomes has been convinced by the appealing style of football under head coach Roberto De Zerbi and the lure of competing in the Champions League proved too strong to turn down.
Gomes is set to reunite with Greenwood at Marseille; the ex-United forward moved to France the previous summer and impressed by scoring 22 goals in his first season. Despite speculation over a potential switch to Barcelona fuelled by their apparent interest, Greenwood has expressed a desire to remain at Marseille, particularly for the chance to compete in the Champions League in the upcoming year.
In fact, earlier in the year, Greenwood stated his anticipation for the experience: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League.", reports the Express.
He also reflected positively on the atmosphere at the club: "All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective."
Since leaving Manchester United in 2021, 24 year old Gomes has been plying his trade at Lille, where the capped England international has accumulated 134 appearances and netted ten goals.
Previously, he admitted the possibility of a future return to United. Speaking to L'Equipe, he expressed: "It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying. But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career.Who should Man United sign this summer? Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille convinced him with their vision, as he explained: “Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille spoke about their project and I believed in it even more, that's what convinced me to move - the faith Lille had in me. ”.
Contemplating a potential return, he mused: “Do I imagine myself coming back one day?”.
He affirmed the emotional ties saying: "Obviously, it's home. I would love to come back. But you never know in football."
Reflecting a grounded approach, he added: "I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."
