Chelsea’s £12.5 million bid should make Man Utd’s next transfer target clear, it’s a no-brainer

Manchester United have already signed Matheus Cunha and they are locked in negotiations for Bryan Mbeumo, but Chelsea might just have given them their next transfer target.

There will be a gaping hole at striker despite signing Matheus Cunha and potentially Bryan Mbeumo, but Man Utd will have already spent north of £120 million by then.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £90 million boost has made sure United aren’t in any PSR trouble, but they will still need to sell to buy after sealing the deal for Mbeumo.

Fortunately, that might not be the case anymore after Chelsea’s £12.5 million bid gave them their next transfer target which should be a no-brainer.

Chelsea make £12.5 million bid for Mike Maignan

Man United will probably be looking at Chelsea with an evil eye after seeing them spend what should’ve been the money for Jadon Sancho on other players.

Sancho returned to United after failing to agree on personal terms with the club, and the Blues might have received a benefit from it.

However, if Chelsea’s latest move in the transfer market is any indication, then they might have given a hint to United about their own move as well.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Chelsea have made a £12.5 million (€15 million) bid for AC Milan’s world-class goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

They are waiting for an answer from AC Milan but the Italian club is open to his sale and a deal could possibly be done for less than £20 million.

That’s where United enter the scenario.

Man Utd trying for Mike Maignan is a no-brainer

United do have an urgent need for a striker but it can be argued that they have as big a need for a new goalkeeper, arguably bigger now that Cunha and Mbeumo are arriving.

Andre Onana’s struggles last season cost United plenty of games and constantly put the team under pressure, with his lack of confidence permeating through the squad.

If a world-class goalkeeper like Maignan is available for less than £20 million, then it’s a no-brainer for United to at least explore the conditions of the deal.

They probably wouldn’t even need to sell to buy Maignan at that price, and Altay Bayindir’s departure alone could cover that fee when accounting for amortisation.

Onana will have a proper competitor for his place or he can be sold, while United can further fortify their ranks with the return of Radek Vitek.

If not, they can sell Vitek and go completely in the green while upgrading their goalkeeping department massively.

Maignan is the sort of transfer opportunity that pre-made plans are put aside for. United need to act.
