Report from Italy leaves door open for Newcastle United to snap up Lille striker Jonathan David

· 8 June 2025, 10:00

**If you're a regular _NUFC Feed_ reader, you'll know of our desire to snap up soon-to-be free agent Jonathan David to partner with Alexander Isak this summer.**

The Canadian striker is set to leave Ligue 1 side Lille at the end of the month when his contract is up, and Newcastle United are one of many clubs hoping to persuade him to join their cause.

It's actually impressive that we've got to June without the 25-year-old giving us any real indication of where he's going to end up.

Each week, a story will come out suggesting that David has a preferred club or preferred league, then a week or so later, that narrative will change.

Jonathan David - we're not giving up yet

Newcastle may still have a chance to land Jonathan David (a slim one)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Most recently, it looked as though Jonathan David had decided he wanted to head to Serie A, with champions Napoli his most likely destination.

However, a report from Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (h/t [The Chronicle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/newcastle-united-handed-jonathan-david-31810088)) has suggested that Italy is not David's preferred destination after all.

According to the Italian outlet, he would prefer a move to the likes of Manchester United, Real Madrid or Barcelona. Again - what is it with Manchester United?

The Alexander Isak problem is Newcastle's biggest obstacle

----------------------------------------------------------

The Chronicle believes that Man United's lack of European football could put them out of the race, but we thought that about Bryan Mbeumo, didn't we? And look how that turned out.

Newcastle have plenty to offer Jonathan David, his wages are expected to fall within the club's wage structure without upsetting anybody.

The problem has always been, as we said with João Pedro, any ambitious striker is going to want assurances of game time, given that they will know they'll be understudy to Alexander Isak unless Eddie Howe changes to a two-striker system.
