Danny Rohl responds to Leicester City question as manager candidate makes preference clear

Danny Rohl sees interest from the likes of Leicester City as “validation” for his progress but indicated he would prefer a move to the Bundesliga.

Amid considerable doubts over the future of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl has become the favourite to take over at the King Power Stadium, with previous frontrunner Russell Martin now in charge at Rangers.

City are not the only club to have been linked with interest in Rohl. Before they appointed Will Still, Southampton were also said to be keen, while the likes of Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen and RB Leipzig have also been linked.

When German newspaper Bild put interest from City, Southampton, and Wolfsburg to Rohl, he said: “I see the interest from clubs as validation of my work. There were inquiries last year, too, even from Germany, from the Bundesliga.

“It feels good that my name is constantly being mentioned both here in England and in Germany.

“But I also know that football is fast-paced. The last 18 or 19 months are no reason to rest. I remain very, very ambitious. And I'm always ready to work hard. We'll see what happens in the summer.”

While City are linked, the 36-year-old’s preference appears to move back to Germany.

Asked when he might be in the dugout of a Bundesliga club, Rohl said: “If it were up to me, as soon as possible.

“The Bundesliga is obviously something special because I grew up with it. For me, it's always about working at the highest level. I want to compete against the best teams, with the best coaches.

“I have the good feeling that I've been able to generate significant added value over the last 18, 19 months in a demanding league with very different playing styles.”

Rohl, formerly assistant manager to Ralph Hasenhuttl at Southampton and then Hansi Flick at Bayern Munich and with the German national team, went to Wednesday in 2023 for his first senior managerial job.

Taking over a team in deep trouble, he guided them away from the relegation zone in his first season. This term, he moved them up to mid-table.

While City have their own troubles with the authorities, so do Wednesday, and they were this week placed under a transfer embargo by the EFL over a failure to pay players.
