Duke Strength Coach Will Stephens Retires

Any successful organization relies on many people doing many different things. When he got to the Boston Celtics, Brad Stevens said that he wanted the janitors to think about championships. He wanted everyone focused on the same goal.

There are a lot of moving parts, in other words, but like any organization, while you want to keep the best ones, people come and go.

Well, Will Stephens was not a huge public part of the program, but he spent 27 years as the Executive Director of Sports Performance and made a huge difference for Duke Basketball.

We’ve been talking about Nick Horvath and his amazing physical transformation at Duke, going from a really skinny perimeter sniper to a massively powerful big man in his last year.

Stephens played a huge role in that, as he did for Jayson Tatum, Cooper Flagg, Marshall Plumlee and so many more.

In many ways, it’s best to hire from within when you can, but given Jon Scheyer’s track record on hires, we’re sure he has some good people in mind, whether it’s internal or not.
