Manchester United set for unexpected£2m transfer windfall after copying Man City tactic

Man United could be set for a welcome cash boost this summer as a result of inserting a sell-on clause they included in a deal last year.

Manchester United could be in line for a surprise cash injection this summer thanks to former youngster Maxi Oyedele.

According to Italian journalist and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Oyedele, who left United last summer to join Polish outfit Legia Warsaw, is attracting interest from a collection of clubs from across Europe.

He has reported that Werder Bremen, PSV Eindhoven, Anderlecht, Club Brugge and two unnamed Championship clubs have all expressed interest in his signature after a promising debut season in Poland.

It has been reported that Oyedele, 20, 'will leave' Legia this summer and is available via a release clause worth €6million (£5.05m at the current exchange rate). The defensive-midfielder made 24 appearances in his debut season at Legia, helping them win the Polish Cup for a 21st time.

News of reported interest in his signature from elsewhere will be of interest to United. As a result of becoming more proactive in the seller's market last summer, the Reds inserted various clauses into a collection of outgoing deals, including the one that saw Oyedele move to Poland.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News at the time, United, despite selling Oyedele for a small fee, inserted a substantial sell-on clause to ensure future profit. Less than 12 months on, that approach looks set to pay off.

According to Romano, the sell-on clause means United will inherit 40 per cent of the fee Legia bank from any potential sale of the midfielder. It means United, who were probably not anticipating Oyedele would develop at the speed he has, could bank just north of £2m.

Oyedele, as proven with the current level of interest being expressed in his signature, enjoyed a strong first season in Poland. His achievements included making his debut for the national team at senior level and making five appearances in the Europa Conference League, including two quarter-final starts against Chelsea.

As a result of United's smart thinking, any funds they bank via sell-on clauses they included in deals from previous windows will go towards assisting their efforts in the quest to remain compliant with the profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

United's cross-city neighbours, Manchester City, have often been the masters of such scenarios in previous years, regularly offloading young talent with sell-on clauses attached to any future moves so they can receive money on the back of any future success.

United also included a buy-back option in the deal that saw Oyedele move to Legia, meaning they covered all bases. Sell-on clauses were also included in other deals United completed last summer.
