BBC Journalist: Tottenham consider shock move to appoint 'elite' PL manager, not Frank or Silva

Tottenham Hotspur have looked at taking Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe 'under consideration' to replace sacked boss Ange Postecoglou in recent weeks, according to reports - though any move for the English gaffer has been ruled out, in what was already an audicious effort to hire someone new for their dugout.

Postecoglou's season with Tottenham ended horrifically on domestic soil, recording a Premier League-lowest 17th, with 22 losses from 38 games overseeing their worst-ever campaign in the competition - and although he won a trophy to end their 17-year spell without silverware, it's not enough to keep him in the job. That saw the 'elite' Howe targeted in an ambitious move to boost their credentials in the top-flight - although it's been unsuccessful.

Report: Tottenham 'Looked at Howe' to Replace Postecoglou

The Newcastle boss is one of the best managers in the Premier League

Eddie Howe

The report by BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel states that with Tottenham's attention now turning to replacing Postecoglou, the main manager to be linked with a move is Thomas Frank - though it's understood that Howe was also taken into consideration.

Any move for the Newcastle gaffer has been deemed as 'unlikely', and with the Magpies having qualified for the Champions League, that is a deal that is now dubbed by Mokbel as being 'nipped in the bud'.

Howe has been immense for Newcastle since joining almost four years ago, leading the club from relegation woes to a mid-table finish in his first season before securing two Champions League spots in three years, only being eight points from a place in the competition in the year they missed out.

Having also taken Bournemouth from the doldrums of League Two all the way to a top-half Premier League finish, there is no doubting Howe's credentials as a boss - but a Tottenham move for him won't happen, despite both clubs featuring in Europe's premier competition.

Brentford gaffer Frank, therefore, continues to be linked, whilst Fulham boss Marco Silva has also been touted with the role despite publicly stating that he will remain at Craven Cottage for the time being.

Levy has a huge decision to make, with the Greek-Australian gaffer being given the boot despite winning the Europa League last month - and any new boss will now be expected to win trophies in order to make his decision to sack Postecoglou the right one.
