Liverpool's striker shortlist emerges as decision expected on Darwin Nunez's future

Liverpool is looking at both Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike as it eyes up a new striker this summer, with Darwin Nunez likely to be on his way out of the club.

The Reds look to be wasting little time this summer after winning the Premier League title, with Jeremie Frimpong’s signing already in the bag, while two more additions look as though they could follow soon.

A deal for Florian Wirtz could be close after Liverpool submitted a third bid for the Bayer Leverkusen star, while Milos Kerkez may follow after being strongly linked with a move to Anfield for some time.

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes may not stop there though, with other areas of the squad likely to be targeted - not least up front.

The writing looks to be on the wall for Nunez after three years on Merseyside, during which time he has failed to consistently live up to the hefty price tag Liverpool paid to sign him from Benfica in 2022.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, it is expected that Nunez will be sold this summer, which would free up some funds to target a new No.9.

Plenty of big names have been touted in that position, with Isak having been a source of speculation for some time, while Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez has been linked again after Liverpool’s attempts to sign him from Manchester City last summer.

Ekitike is among the more recent names to have been linked, along with Benjamin Sesko, who is being strongly touted for a move to Arsenal.

It is Isak and Ekitike though that are specifically named by Ornstein in Liverpool’s search for a new striker. It’s claimed that the Reds are among the host of clubs that like Isak, while there is “admiration” for Ekitike.

Liverpool.com says: A new striker is an absolute must for Liverpool. After three years, it's clear Nunez is not the answer, and Diogo Jota's slump toward the end of the season - plus his consistent injury problems - mean he can't really be relied upon.

Luis Diaz has performed well when thrown into the role, but the Colombian isn't the answer long-term - especially if he's looking elsewhere this summer.

When Liverpool goes after a new striker though is the question. Clearly, the club will want to get deals for Wirtz and Kerkez wrapped up first, and then it may be a case of moving Nunez on first before getting that new No.9.

Who knows how long that will take, but in any case, Isak does feel like he might be out of reach this summer, especially with Newcastle securing Champions League football. It will be interesting to see which, if any, other names are on Liverpool's list.
