Newcastle United enquired about Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo but he prefers a Manchester United switch.
Bryan Mbeumo reportedly wants to “wear the shirt of Manchester United” - the key reason behind his Newcastle United snub.
News emerged earlier this week that the Red Devils appeared to have won the race for the Brentford man. That is despite finishing 15th last season - their worst Premier League campaign - and being in a dire financial situation.
While no concrete offer has been made, Brentford are holding out for around £60million - with manager Thomas Frank admitting they are willing to sell. Many have suspected wages were a key factor behind Mbeumo’s decision.
Bryan Mbeumo not money-motivated
Various reports suggest Man United are willing to stump up £250,000 per week to land the 25-year-old. Those numbers are outside of Newcastle’s ballpark and would require tearing up the current wage structure at St James’ Park.
Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that the allure of Man United - not money - swayed Mbeumo’s decision. He posted on social media: “Bryan Mbeumo wants to go to Manchester United. This is the decision of the player, he wants to wear the shirt of Man United, he wants to play at Old Trafford, despite approaches from Newcastle, Arsenal and more clubs.
“His priority is Manchester United. He has an agreement with Manchester United and (they’re) now working to get the deal done.”
Thomas Frank on Bryan Mbeumo sale
As mentioned, Bees boss Frank has already put Mbeumo in the shop window. He told Danish media last week: "It is clear that if he is to be sold, it must be for a nice, nice amount. It is a lot. Really a lot. Then it is clear that it is impossible to replace him one for one. It cannot be done.
“There is a reason why he costs x number of million pounds, and we do not have x number of million pounds to buy for. I would say that I would be surprised if a lot of big clubs don't look at him. I would be surprised with what he has to offer.
"How many wingers score 20 goals for a mid-table club? And then with seven assists plus his work ethic. And his character. All these things mean that he has a lot, so he is a good player."

Bruno Guimaraes makes Newcastle United demand
Toon skipper Bruno Guimaraes has called upon the club’s board to give them a helping hand ahead of the Champions League campaign. He said last month: “I think this (a lack of signings) cost our qualification for the Champions League (last season) in my point of view.
“If we qualify, I think we have to add more. I don’t know how many players, but we have to make it bigger with more experienced players. Like the gaffer said, let’s see what’s going to happen, but like I said, I’m very excited for the future of this club and I hope I’m gonna be a part of it.”
