Leicester City warned off midfielder deal and told what their transfer priority should be

Leicester City should set their sights on young, hungry players this transfer window rather than former Premier League players who may be past their best.

That’s the reaction from City supporters after links to former Arsenal and Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain re-emerged.

Reports in Turkey suggested City have made an offer for the 31-year-old, who currently plays for Besiktas.

It seems unlikely, with City not at a stage where they can bring in players amid the uncertainty over their managerial situation.

Plus, it seems a convenient link with Besiktas looking to offload Oxlade-Chamberlain’s wages, the midfielder coming into the final year of his contract at the club.

In any case, he’s not the sort of player City should be targeting, fans believe.

While he has international and Premier League pedigree, Oxlade-Chamberlain is now the wrong side of 30, has had injury issues, and would likely command big wages.

Those are not characteristics fans want in this summer’s recruits. Here’s what LeicestershireLive commenters believe.

KevColey: “This would be in keeping with our recent recruitment 'successes'. Anyway, we don't need another injury prone player; we've got enough already.”

foxesgalactico: “Why would you want a player that's injury prone in the Championship of all places?!”

thepunky1: “No, we want young players who have passion.”

foxile: “He's just the sort of player we should avoid signing – some way past his best, injury prone and looking for a big final pay day to end his career (reminds me of signing Ryan Bertrand and we barely saw him doing anything effective on the pitch).”

mickjack: “Young and hungry players please!

Yorkiefox: “No more hospital signings please! Ricardo has not played as much as he would have wanted due to injuries. Ndidi is getting more than his fair share now. Fatawu is going to have to get up to speed after a year out. Souttar will be the same when he comes back.”

spinneyfox: “Another has been like Ayew and De Cordova-Reid, but this guy is injury prone as well, and on big money. Should be signing players who are young and hungry.”

Darkblue13: “That would totally sum this club up. Sign a formerly good ‘name’, who will be on big wages only to sit in the stands nursing his latest injury.”

globalfox: “No, just no. You must learn from your mistakes. No more overpaid, broken has-beens.”
