Departing Newcastle United star, Jay Turner-Cooke, has paid tribute to the club as his four-year stint on Tyneside comes to an end. The midfielder, who was called upon by Eddie Howe in friendly games for the first-team is one of six Academy stars bidding farewell to the Magpies.

Friday's announcement confirmed the news Turner-Cooke, Ellis Stanton, James Huntley, Josh Donaldson and Harry and Rory Powell would all be leaving Newcastle when their contracts expire in the coming weeks. Of the released youngsters, Turner-Cooke was by far the most established young talent who, at one stage, looked as though he may be in Howe's plans.

He joined Newcastle after leaving Sunderland in 2021, going on to feature for the senior side in Saudi Arabia against Al-Hilal in 2022 and Gateshead in 2023. Turner-Cooke scored against the latter before he was shipped out on loan once again.

During his time at the club, the youngster also played for Tranmere Rovers and St Johnstone. Taking to social media after his exit was confirmed, Turner-Cooke wrote: "Thank you NUFC, thank you to the staff and players I’ve met along the way I’ve loved playing and working alongside you! Excited for what’s next."

Discussing all six exits, Academy Director Steve Harper said: "I want to extend my gratitude to all the players who are moving on from the Academy. Their commitment and growth - both as footballers and individuals - reflect the dedication they have shown throughout their time representing Newcastle United.

“They have been a credit to themselves, their families and to the club and they should be immensely proud of everything they’ve achieved.

"Our support doesn’t stop here. The Academy remains a resource for them as they take the next steps in their careers, and I look forward to seeing where their journeys take them. On behalf of everyone here, we wish them every success for the future."

Meanwhile, Newcastle also confirmed the departure of Jamal Lewis after his contract came to an end. As it stands, John Ruddy and Callum Wilson could also leave Howe's dressing room if they fail to agree new deals with the north east club in the coming weeks.
