Cody Gakpo has named the game in which his Liverpool side started to believe they could win the Premier League title. Arne Slot's side secured the title with a 5-1 win against Tottenham on April 27, meaning they were able to relax for the final few games of the campaign.
After matches against Chelsea, Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion, the Reds finally got their hands on the trophy on the final day of the season following a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. And Gakpo admits that the 2-0 victory at home to Manchester City back in December was the moment when his side started to believe they could achieve something special.
He said: "We had a lot of great games, maybe, the 2-0 win against City at home which really, we already had a very good feeling, but maybe this gave us more confidence that we could do something special this season.
“I think that was a special moment. We had many special moments. We had many special comebacks, comebacks against Brighton at home, with 10 men we drew with Fulham at home which was a great game. 2-0 win Brentford away, I can name all the games. We had a lot of beautiful moments."
Although this was the second championship the Reds have won in the last five years, it was the first to be lifted in front of supporters since 1990 due to Covid restrictions in 2020.
The streets around Anfield before kick-off against the Eagles were a sea of red, while those inside partied long and hard as they watched Virgil van Dijk lift the title.
"Difficult to put it into words, especially the last half an hour,” Gakpo said reflecting on the scenes. “It's been an amazing season in the league.
“Beautiful moments, beautiful comebacks, beautiful games. Tough moments as well but I think we showed good character this year as well.
“We have something to build on in the coming years, so we are proud of that. It's very special. It did exceed those expectations of mine.
“It's been an amazing moment for all of us with the fans. The last time I wasn't here but there were no fans but I think for all the guys it's a beautiful special moment and we are very proud and grateful we're here now with the fans at this club with the trophy.
"It is very special. It's an amazing club. It's an amazing soul of the club with the fans, with the people who work here with the players.
“With the legends who came to watch, with the legends who are on the field as well mixed with the youngsters, it's been amazing. It's special."
