The Boston Red Sox desperately need things to change with Trevor Story.
Story started the season smoking hot, hitting .337 with five home runs, 15 RBIs and an .894 OPS through 23 games. It just has gotten really, really ugly from there. The Red Sox have gotten almost nothing from their second-highest-paid player in the month-plus since, with many calling for him to lose his starting spot amid a roster shuffle that could introduce both Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony into the lineup.
You won’t be hearing much of that after his performance in Saturday’s victory over the New York Yankees, however.
Story knocked in five runs during the series-tying victory at Yankee Stadium, helping his club take the lead and then extend it in two pivotal moments at the dish.
“He’s been swinging the bat well since Milwaukee,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of Story following the game, per Christopher Smith of MassLive. “I know the numbers don’t show that and the strikeouts and all that. But he put some good at-bats, hit the ball hard, hit it on a line. We need everybody to contribute.”

Boston was obviously looking for more from the veteran this season, but at this point, they’ll take competence in big spots and not ask twice. If they can get more, it’s a cherry on top.
