Keith Hackett has called for the introduction of a review panel, after a controversial incident involving Chelsea transfer target Mike Maignan.

The former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider he would like to see clear acts of simulation retrospectively sanctioned, after Karim Adeyemi was booked for diving during the first half of Germany’s UEFA Nations League third-place play-off against France.

Didier Deschamps’ side ended up winning the game 2-0, with goals from first Kylian Mbappe, and then Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, proving enough for the 2022 World Cup finalists to secure the Nations League bronze medal.

Manchester City target Rayan Cherki played the first 68 minutes of the contest for the French, while Liverpool-bound Florian Wirtz played the full game for Germany.

Spain and Portugal will face off on Sunday (8 June) evening to decide the winners of the 2024/25 Nations League.

The incident occurred in the latter stages of the first period, when the scores were still level at 0-0 at a sun-soaked MHP Arena in Stuttgart.

In the 31st minute, Dortmund forward Adeyemi burst into the French box, before dropping to the floor amid claims that he had been fouled.

Referee Ivan Kruzliak immediately pointed to the spot, with France keeper Mike Maignan, who could be set to join Chelsea, adjudged to be the guilty party.

However, after a four-minute-long VAR check, it was determined that Adeyemi had dived and the decision was reversed, with the German attacker being cautioned for simulation.

Keith Hackett calls for introduction of review panel

After being asked by Football Insider for his opinion on the diving incident that took place during Germany’s clash with France, Hackett said:

“When you look at the camera angle afforded to you can clearly see that the player has committed a clear act of simulation in an attempt to deceive the referee.

“These simulation offences which is an act of cheating should always be sanctioned with a yellow card by referees.

“I would like to see the introduction of a review panel where acts of this type can be retrospectively sanctioned.”
