Liverpool have seen their £113million British record bid rejected by Bayer Leverkusen.

The Reds have been in the driving seat to land the German youngster, but are facing a challenge to meet Leverkusen's eye-watering asking price.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds' third offer, which totaled $153 million (£113 million) - around $135 million (£100 million) up front and up to $18 million (£13 million) in add-ons - has been turned down.

Leverkusen are believed to be holding out for around $160 million (£118 million) despite being resigned to losing Wirtz, but wants to maximize the fee it receives for him, having originally set an asking price of $171M.

Despite the bid being turned down, Sky Germany are reporting that a deal is close, and a medical for Wirtz could be set up as early as next week.
