Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy appears to be taking a clearer shape, with highly regarded journalist Fabrizio Romano revealing that the Gunners are now fully focused on securing a deal for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško. According to Romano, talks are actively ongoing and the situation is developing positively — while their previously linked interest in Viktor Gyökeres has hit a standstill.
The 22-year-old Slovenia international has emerged as Arsenal’s primary striker target this summer, with internal discussions accelerating in recent days. Romano stated that Arsenal are “discussing and advancing for Šeško,” with both the player and his club RB Leipzig involved in talks. While no agreement has been finalized yet, the momentum behind Šeško’s move to the Emirates is steadily growing.
Šeško’s profile fits Arsenal’s long-term vision perfectly. Young, physically dominant, and with immense technical upside, the striker has long been admired by Arsenal’s recruitment team. His blend of pace, aerial ability, and goal-scoring instinct makes him an ideal addition to Mikel Arteta’s attacking plans. With Gabriel Jesus playing more of a support role and Kai Havertz excelling in a hybrid midfield role, Arsenal have made it a clear priority to sign a natural goalscorer who can lead the line for years to come.
Romano’s update also brings clarity to the club’s stance on Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres, who had also been heavily linked with a switch to north London. However, the Italian reporter confirmed that there has been no recent progress on that front. “The other name in the list, Viktor Gyökeres — at the moment, that situation is not developing,” Romano said, essentially ruling out any immediate movement on that deal.
While Gyökeres has enjoyed a phenomenal season in Portugal and impressed with his power, work rate, and finishing, there is a general feeling that the striker is overpriced. His release clause of over £85 million is proving a major obstacle, especially when compared to Šeško’s more reasonable valuation and longer-term potential.
Arsenal’s transfer team, led by sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta, are believed to be in complete agreement over targeting Šeško as their primary centre-forward this summer. His age, style of play, and potential for growth make him a better fit for Arsenal’s project than Gyökeres, who is two years older and would represent a short-term solution at a premium cost.
