Ex-Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes is on the brink of a move to Marseille, where he'll team up with Mason Greenwood after a shock transfer swoop.

The English midfielder's deal was all set to run out this summer. Whispers were rife about a grand return to Old Trafford, while Spurs and West Ham were reportedly sniffing around too.

But in a twist, Gomes has decided to take his talents elsewhere. According to reports from RMC Sport, he's about to ink a three-year deal with the French giants Marseille, swayed by the prospect of playing under Roberto De Zerbi in the Champions League.

Gomes will join forces with ex-United star and fellow academy graduate Greenwood in France. Greenwood bagged himself 22 smashing goals in his first term after making the switch to Marseille last year.

Despite Barcelona eyeballing him, Greenwood's made it clear he's sticking with Marseille, eager for Champions League action. Earlier this year, he declared: "I hope to be here next year for the Champions League.

"All the other players tell me that the stadium is something special. I think it's been a very positive season, we've reached our objective," reports the Express.

Gomes has been turning heads for Lille since waving goodbye to United back in 2021. The four-cap England ace has clocked up 134 appearances and banged in ten goals since crossing the Channel.

Previously, he hinted at a potential return to United. Speaking to L'Equipe, he admitted: "It was a very difficult decision. In my heart, I wanted to leave, in my head, I was thinking of staying.

"But I had to follow my heart. I felt that I needed to take another step in my career. I felt that had I stayed, there wouldn't be a lot of opportunities for me.

"Luis Campos [Lille's then sporting director] and Lille laid out their vision and it struck a chord with me, convincing me to jump ship - their belief in me sealed the deal.

"Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Of course, it's home. I'd love to make a comeback. But football's a funny old game."

He added a note of realism: "I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can't predict what will happen in the future."
