Manchester United have set their sights on this soon-to-be Premier League free agent.
The Red Devils have kicked off their transfer window by agreeing a deal to bring in Matheus Cunha from Wolves. Since initial interest in the Brazilian, all signs pointed to him joining the club ahead of the new season.
Cunha is expected to help transform Ruben Amorim’s attack, having recorded one of the lowest goal returns in the Premier League last season. Only Everton and the relegated three teams found the back of the net fewer times than United, leaving the window wide open for new attacking recruits.
Man United have ‘serious interest’ in Everton star
As he approaches the end of his contract on Merseyside, he has found himself on the radar of multiple clubs. The report claims that Newcastle United, Nottingham Forest, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham are all monitoring Calvert-Lewin’s situation in these final weeks.
United are ‘keen on the possibility’ of ‘adding a player with experience’ in the Premier League, without the hassle of paying a transfer fee. Their interest is said to be ‘serious’ but Calvert-Lewin is yet to make a decision on his future, with multiple options to choose from.
While Everton have not officially announced he will be leaving this summer, they are ‘resigned’ to losing him following multiple rejected contract offers. According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, it is looking increasingly likely the 28-year-old will leave the Toffees.
“If he was going to stay, you’d think that contract would have been sorted by now, and Calvert-Lewin has probably explored his options as a free agent,” O’Rourke said. “Everton have a host of striker targets, so they’re ready to move on from Calvert-Lewin.”
Calvert-Lewin comes with a risk
United are in desperate need of new options in attack, so the opportunity to sign a tried and tested Premier League centre-forward for free is not one to pass up easily. Signing Calvert-Lewin would be a very good investment on the financial front but his arrival would come with a risk.
Calvert-Lewin has had torrid luck with injuries during his career and missed as many as 15 games during the 2024/25 season. His fitness problems span beyond the most recent season as well, which raises a slight concern over whether injuries will also impact his time at Old Trafford.
However, Calvert-Lewin has proven he can perform when at his best and part of an influential, creative system. During the 2020/21 season, he enjoyed one of his most influential seasons with 21 goals in all competitions, helping Everton to secure a tenth-place finish.
When fit, Calvert-Lewin could be a huge asset to United but his injury history does raise a cause for concern.
