“Since My 3rd Year”: Miami Dolphins Superstar On Why He Retired

The New Orleans Saints and Miami Dolphins’ superstar left tackle, Terron Armstead, announced his retirement from the NFL after 12 seasons, including the first nine in New Orleans and the last three in Miami. He developed into one of the league’s top offensive tackles, starting 131 of 135 regular-season games and 11 postseason contests. Armstead’s accolades include five Pro Bowls, three with the Saints and two with the Dolphins, and one Second-Team All-Pro selection in 2018.

2024 played a huge role in his retirement.

Terron Armstead battled three injuries during the 2024 season, causing him to miss three games, including one with a nagging injury later in the year. He suffered a rotator cuff injury in Week 2 but did not miss any time, and then suffered a concussion in Week 3 and missed Week 4. During the last half of the season, Armstead battled a knee injury, which kept him out of most practices during Weeks 11-18, sidelining him in Week 15, and preventing him from finishing three of those games in that span.

During a Thursday appearance on Nightcap with Shannon Sharpe and Chad Ochocinco, Terron Armstead explained why he retired. He shared that his knee injury sustained with the New Orleans Saints during the 2015 season never fully healed. Armstead went on to say that the pain was too much for him in 2024, as he couldn’t walk until Wednesday or Thursday after games, only managing to play because of pain meds.

“I’ve been dealing with a knee since my third year in the league,” Armstead said on Nightcap. “I didn’t see a practice field at all, and not because I didn’t want to or the Dolphins just wanted me to rest. It’s like I literally couldn’t walk. After a game on Sunday, I wouldn’t be able to walk on my own, under my own power, until Wednesday, Thursday. So I was only able to play under the pain meds. I couldn’t put any pressure on my knee, so it was like, I can’t keep doing that to myself.”
