4 players Liverpool can sell to raise $160M to complete Florian Wirtz transfer

Liverpool’s summer transfer plans are continuing at pace, with Tuesday’s deadline in sight.

The market shuts briefly next week and then reopens again six days later, so the short pause shouldn't have a huge impact on the Reds’ progress. But there remains hope that Florian Wirtz's transfer could be confirmed before Tuesday.

A report in the Daily Mail claims Liverpool has seen a third bid knocked back for Wirtz, as Bayer Leverkusen holds out for a staggering £118 million ($160M). Given Liverpool’s lack of spending in recent years, plus the increased prize money it will receive from last season, and the confirmation of several lucrative sponsorship deals, the club is not short of funds to invest in the squad.

That said, with Jeremie Frimpong’s €35M ($40M) transfer confirmed, and the Reds reportedly closing in on the £45M ($61M) signing of Milos Kerkez, that will certainly take up a large portion of the summer budget.

More signings are expected in the window, including a striker. There could also be additions at center-back and in midfield, so Liverpool may need to bolster its finances.

Thankfully, Arne Slot is not short of sellable assets. In fact, the Liverpool head coach could be willing to part with several players to secure new signings.

Darwin Nunez must be near the top of that list following a woeful campaign under the Dutchman in which he scored one goal in the final four months of the season. Spanish outlet AS states Liverpool is willing to sell the player for around €40M ($45M), which would represent a significant figure for the summer rebuild.

Elsewhere, Harvey Elliott may fetch up to £40M ($54M), claims talkSPORT, with several Premier League clubs known to be interested in the midfielder.

Another lucrative option for the Reds could be derived from selling Ben Doak. The youngster is valued at £30M ($41M) by Liverpool, according to the Telegraph, and has attracted interest from Everton.

The sale of Kostas Tsimikas for around £15M ($20M), would bring Liverpool’s income from four signings to a neat $160M, the exact price reportedly required to bring in Wirtz.

Tsimikas is expected to depart this summer if the Reds sign Kerkez, and the Greek left-back has been linked with a move to Leeds United.

That’s not forgetting the transfer fees Liverpool has already received for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher this summer, which equate to around $31M.

There are others who could depart, and this week has been dominated by talk of an exit for Luis Diaz, while Federico Chiesa has also been discussing his future.

Tyler Morton is expected to move on; Joe Gomez may also leave this summer, while Jarell Quansah and Wataru Endo have been linked with exits.

Even after the Wirtz deal is wrapped up, there are plenty more twists and turns to come.
