Newcastle United appear to have been handed a major boost amid continued links to signing Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface.

The Magpies have been heavily linked with signing the Nigeria international this summer as they prepare for their return to the Champions League. Newcastle finished fifth in the Premier League last season and will now be back competing in Europe's elite cup competition next term.

Eddie Howe and Co. will be tasked with strengthening the Newcastle squad this summer ahead of the new campaign. Boniface is one player who has been credited as a potential target who could move to St James' Park this summer.

Reports from Germany last month claimed that Newcastle want to sign Boniface during the summer transfer window. There have also been separate claims suggesting that the striker is valued at around €50million (£42million).

The Chronicle understands that a switch to St James' Park would interest the 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star.

Fabrizio Romano has now reported on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Boniface could leave Leverkusen if a "good proposal" is presented to the Bundesliga club. It has also been claimed that the striker is the subject of interest from several "new options" which have emerged this summer.

"Victor Boniface and Bayer Leverkusen could part ways this summer with a good proposal for both sides," Romano wrote on X. "After move to Saudi collapsed in January, new options are available on the market and Boniface could leave the club."

It was in January that Boniface was reported to be close to leaving Leverkusen to join Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. There were suggestions of a €70million (£59million) being on the cards, before Al Nassr went on to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa instead.

Boniface has previously said that he does not see himself playing in the Premier League in the future.

During an interview with SportyTV in September, he acknowledged: "I'm not saying this just because I'm on this level, I've been saying this even before I had an international passport, even before I dreamt of coming to Europe, I don't really like the Premier League. I prefer Spanish football or German football.

"I'm not saying, for example, if a good team comes for me, I will not go. I am just saying if you ask me to pick two countries, I really want to play in Germany and Spain, to live and play in Germany and Spain."
