Manchester United are being linked with a swoop for a new attacker this summer
Manchester United have the chance to bring in some new players this summer. They also have the opportunity to let some individuals head out the exit door. The Red Devils finished down in 15th place in the table last season.
They need to perform better in the next campaign and should add some more quality to their ranks. Ruben Amorim was picked as their replacement for Erik ten Hag last November. Prior to his move to Old Trafford, he caught the eye at Sporting Lisbon.
Manchester United eye Porto striker Samu Aghehowa
United will ‘battle’ it out for Porto striker Samu Aghehowa, according to CaughtOffside. The report suggests the player has a release clause of £84million. Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest in the player.
Aghehowa, 21, is a bright young talent who has a bright future ahead of him in the game. The Red Devils could see him as someone to boost their attacking department. He made the switch to Portugal last year and he hasn’t looked back since.
The prospect has scored 25 goals in all competitions for Porto so far, 19 of which have come in the league. They may now have to fend off attention from elsewhere over the next couple of months to try and keep hold of him. It would be a blow to lose him, especially after just 12 months.
He was on the books at Granada as a youngster and played once for their first-team after impressing with their B team. Atletico Madrid then snapped him up but his time with the La Liga giants was short lived. He was loaned out by Diego Simeone to Alaves to get some experience under his belt before his current club swooped in.
Would Samu Aghehowa suit Manchester United?
United could see Aghehowa as someone to boost their attacking ranks. If he joined, he would give them more competition and depth at the top end of the pitch. He has proved he can score goals at Porto and may now want to test himself in England amid links with a fresh challenge.
The Red Devils have been told to sell Antony by former coach Rene Meulensteen which would free up space and funds to pave the way for potential new arrivals like Aghehowa. Meulensteen has said: “I wouldn't bring Antony back because I've seen enough of him that he's not cut out for the club and not good enough. His performances are fuelled by his personality and are not for the good of the team, he’s selfish.
“You will never get your £80m back from Antony. I thought it was stupid business at the time when I heard it was happening. I know that when they heard about the deal in Amsterdam, they were doing cartwheels. It shows again that players in those lower leagues, like Holland, are completely different. They're playing very different styles, a slower tempo. Teams like Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord are the best, so it's easy for them to look good.”
