Quality over quantity - Chelsea Transfer Window Preview

Having secured a long-awaited return to the Champions League and won the Conference League in Enzo Maresca's first season in charge, Chelsea will be aiming to build on last season's success by bringing in reinforcements to help the club continue their steady progression.

The West Londoners have already wasted no time in making their first signing by bringing in striker Liam Delap from Ipswich Town but you would expect there to be plenty more business from Chelsea in terms of incomings and outgoings.

We take a look to how the Blues can strengthen as well as potential departures:

Areas to strengthen

Goalkeeper

The goalkeeping position caused plenty of debate last season following some poor performances from current number one Robert Sanchez. While the Spaniard, at times, has made some important saves to help Chelsea pick up some vital wins, it is clear that a top quality goalkeeper is needed.

Chelsea have already been on the lookout for a new number one, with various media outlets reporting that the Blues are currently in talks with AC Milan over the signing of France international Mike Maignan. The 29-year-old has less than a year remaining on his contract at Milan and would provide some much-needed experience to the Blues backline.

Maignan is keen on moving to Stamford Bridge and the two sides are close to agreeing terms. However, should that deal fall through, current goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, who spent last season on loan at RC Strasbourg, may well return to the Chelsea fold for the 2025/26 campaign.

Winger

Enzo Maresca will determined to bring in a new winger this summer after the club decided that Jadon Sancho will not be signed permanently following a breakdown in negotiations between the player and club.

A player at the top of that list is Borussia Dortmund youngster Jamie Gittens, who the club have an agreement in principle with according to Fabrice Hawkins, with negotiations ongoing between the two clubs.

The club have also been linked Real Madrid's Rodrygo but it is unlikely the Brazilian will leave Los Blancos, whilst Chelsea have targeted Alejandro Garnacho in recent months and while the Argentine is set to leave Old Trafford, the 20-year-old will most likely move elsewhere.

Striker

Despite already bringing in Liam Delap, Chelsea are still eyeing up another striker to help compete with the Englishman. With Nicolas Jackson the only other senior centre-forward at the club, the Senegalese has struggle for consistency as the West Londoners are in need of a proven goalscorer.

Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike has been a forward Chelsea have been linked with for a while with champions Liverpool also interested. However, the Blues are hesitant due to the club's valuation of the striker, who scored 22 times in all competitions last season.

Other striking options Chelsea have been linked with includes Viktor Gyokeres, who is also wanted by a host of other clubs, and Victor Osimhen but it is highly unlikely either one of those players will move to Stamford Bridge.

Possible Departures

Benoit Badiashile

French centre-back Benoit Badiashile could both be on the move having dropped down the pecking order at the club. Towards the end of May, L'Equipe reported that Marseille were interested in bringing Badiashile back to France.

Axel Disasi

Fellow Frenchman Axel Disasi was shipped out on loan to Aston Villa back in January but will not make his loan to Villa Park permanent. According to Foot Mercato, Newcastle and Saudi Pro-League side Al-Ahli are set to battle it out for his signature.

Joao Felix

Despite only joining last season, it is clear things have not worked out for Joao Felix, who seems destined to leave Chelsea - with the club setting of price tag of at least £21 million for the forward.

The 25-year-old struggled for gametime under Maresca before going on loan to AC Milan in the January transfer window, which made very little difference for Felix. Portuguese outlet A Bola have stated Felix's boyhood club Benfica are in talks to bring him back to the club.

Christopher Nkunku

It is safe to say that Christopher Nkunku's future lies elsewhere, with the French forward very much out of favour under Maresca. The 27-year-old's time in West London has been marred by injury problems and, as a result, has struggled to settle into the team.

Nkunku has been linked with a move back to Germany, with Bayern Munich interested in the forward. Meanwhile, according to reports, Chelsea have offered the Frenchman to Barcelona in exchange for Fermin Lopez as part of a swap deal.
