The Milwaukee Brewers have made a transaction of claiming outfielder Drew Avans off of waivers. Avans, a 28 years old lefty, made his MLB debut with the Athletics in late May, but was recently designated for assignment. Matt Arnold claimed him off waivers and optioned him to Triple-A.

With Avans joining the Brewers 40-man roster, he makes the fourth active left-handed hitting outfield option. Currently Sal Frelick, Christian Yelich, and Jake Bauers are the active players available. Another lefty, Garrett Mitchell, is on the mend from an oblique injury, which would give Milwaukee five total left-handed hitting outfielders to choose from once he is healthy.

Avans fits the Brewers type quite well. He is an athletic player, who has played primarily center field throughout his career. Additionally, Avans gets on base well and then uses his speed to get into scoring position. Throughout 691 career minor league games, Avans has a .370 on-base percentage that includes an 80 walk season in 2024. He also has stolen 177 bases, that includes swiping 40 in 2022 and 35 a season ago.
When/if Avans ends up impacting the big league club will be interesting to see. Collins has found ways to contribute and Mitchell + Blake Perkins are expected to begin rehab assignments soon, with anticipated returns to the big leagues in early July.
