Chelsea are said to be pushing ahead with their efforts to sign a winger.
Chelsea are pushing to add to their early signing of Liam Delap, with the Blues expected to strengthen significantly this summer. Enzo Maresca’s men managed genuine progress in the season just gone, securing a top four finish and Champions League football, while they also won the Conference League title.
The Blues will want to close the gap on champions Liverpool next season, while they will also want to have a strong run in the Champions League. More strength and depth is required to pull that off, and Chelsea have already started working towards that, signing Liam Delap for £30million at the start of the early window.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are willing to offer another long-term deal in a bid to get it done. He wrote on X: “Understand Chelsea are set to improve their proposal for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, new bid is coming very soon. Negotiations remain ongoing with Borussia Dortmund after first bid rejected… new one, shortly. 7 year deal ready for the winger.”
Sky Sports claim Dortmund will demand £42-50million for Gittens, but Chelsea are only said to want to pay around £30million. The 20-year-old made 48 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring 12 and assisting five.
Gittens on what to expect
Speaking to Bundesliga on how he thrives when playing with freedom, the young winger said: “Yeah, they can both work. It’s now just about trying to put them together, to be free but also when to play easy and when to pass the simple pass. But over time, these things will come to my head, and I’ll get used to it. He talked to me already about my next steps and what I’ve got to improve on. Just to be a constant goal threat to the opposition. If that’s scoring or assisting goals, becoming more reliable on the ball in certain areas. If it’s in midfield, to protect the ball, stronger. And just to enjoy my football and have a smile on my face.”
On playing relaxed and with a smile on his face, Gittens added: “I think so. Sometimes if I’m angry, I also play well. But as a perspective from the outside, if I’m happy, they think that I’m playing better. But at times, it’s mixed. If I’m angry, I play better. If I’m happy, I play better. If you’re angry and motivated, you can do it. Or if you’re happy. It just depends where you are mentally. On the day, if I’m angry, I might play better. It just happens.”
Former Dortmund boss Nuri Sahin said of Gittens back in November: "You need 1-on-1 players who have speed. He's maturing in his game. We talk a lot about risk and reward. When do I go into the 1-on-1, when do I prepare for it? When he gets rolling, he's a fantastic player. He's also made huge strides defensively.”
