'I'm sorry' - Sandro Tonali boss sacked as Newcastle United hero named in Aston Villa-linked…

According to reports, Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali faces an uncertain future both at international and club level.

Sandro Tonali is going nowhere. We know that, Newcastle United know it, so do you. However it seems the Italian press - and the Sunday Mirror - have little clue.

While the player is keen to remain on Tyneside - and said so just a matter of days ago - reports in Italy suggest Juventus, fresh from qualifying for the Champions League, are set to return to Newcastle and take Tonali, much like they did Lloyd Kelly in the last window.

And although they received little to no resistance from the Magpies’ hierarchy in January for free transfer Kelly, any move towards the £55million midfield maestro from Milano, would not be welcomed. Nor can we see any remote reason as to why it would succeed either, with United in no need to sell, Juve unlikely to be in any position to satisfy the financial demands of a non-PSR pressured NUFC and the player not wanting a Serie A return, at least not now, anyway.

However, According to the Sunday Mirror, Newcastle need to be ready for action - and they could be offered an Aston Villa midfielder, who was once on Eddie Howe’s radar, in return.

They state: “Juventus want Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali as part of an Italian-based re-build of the Turin giants. And the Serie A club, now run by Damien Comoli, are ready to offer former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz in exchange. Tonali, 25, joined Toon from Milan for £55m in 2023 before he was banned for 10 months for breaking gambling rules. Juventus, who finished fourth in Serie A and will play the Champions League, also want Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.”

Sandro Tonali transfer: Newcastle United midfielder addresses future

At the back end of last week, Tonali discussed why he won’t be leaving Newcastle in a hurry, although he did admit he misses home, a touch. He told Sky Sport Italia: "I'm happy where I am now. I’ve found people who care about me, and I care about them. I don’t want to break any of the bonds I’ve built.

“I’ve had a lot of thoughts every day, but right now, I’m happy where I am.”

“Sometimes, when I am away from Italy for a long time or during long breaks, I do miss coming home a bit, but I always come back with the national team and I always give my best,” Tonali added.

“There’s a group here that wants to be together and needs to be here, united. There’s a desire to face these ten days as a real team, staying close and trying not to make things harder for ourselves. That’s often where the teams struggle, and we’re trying to keep things simple.”

Luciano Spalletti sacked as Italy coach

Meanwhile, while speculation persists that Tonali will have an uncertain club future, he definitely will have a different international one, after Luciano Spalletti was sacked as coach of the Italy national team.

Speaking about the decision, Spalletti said: “I'm sorry, I would have preferred to stay and try to change things. I have an excellent relationship with Gravina, but I take note of the dismissal due to the negative results.”
