Manchester City are looking to tie down Rodri’s future after he’s been repeatedly linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent years.

The Spain international missed the majority of the latest campaign after suffering a serious knee ligament injury against Arsenal last September.

The 28-year-old made an emotional comeback ahead of schedule in Man City’s victory over Bournemouth last month.

Football Insider revealed on 25 April Man City would offer Rodri a new deal to deter interest from Real Madrid this summer, with his contract set to expire in 2027.

The Mirror reported on 31 May Rodri is now expected to sign a new deal at the Etihad until 2029.

The newspaper said the Spaniard currently earns £200,000 a week, but his new deal will be worth more than £300,000 a week.

That would make him the second-highest earner behind Erling Haaland, who is believed to be on more than £500,000 a week.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider it would be a “big” development if the club can agree a new deal with Rodri and block a potential move to Real Madrid.

The Ballon d’Or winner is likely to play an integral role at the upcoming Club World Cup, which starts on 15 June and ends on 13 July.

Man City will face Moroccan side Wydad AC in their first game of the 32-competition in the US on 18 June.

Rodri set to face ‘big’ Man City hurdle

Borson insisted the next “big” hurdle for Rodri is coming through the upcoming games unscathed following his injury.

He told Football Insider: “You would think that the Real Madrid strategy of picking players off when they’re free transfers would definitely apply to Rodri if they could get him.

“We have to see what he’s like when he’s back. That’s the next big hurdle is how does he recover from a very serious injury that he had.

“It’s going to be quite a painful watch for City fans, watching those first few games just hoping he doesn’t get any pulls or knocks or injuries until he’s sort of in the flow.

“But if City can prevent him walking out the door on a free transfer to Real Madrid, that will be a very big and important development over the next few years because he’s clearly the linchpin of the side.

“It’s not a huge surprise what happened last season when he was injured.

“I think he’s just another critical piece in the next block of City’s rebuild.”

Man City close in on three new signings

In terms of incomings at the Etihad, Man City have agreed a deal to sign Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan as they look to strengthen their midfield options this summer.

Meanwhile, Lyon forward Rayan Cherki and Wolves left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri are also expected to join the 10-time English champions.

Man City are keen to revamp their squad before the Club World Cup gets underway next weekend.
