Manchester United have been handed a potential twist in their hopes of signing Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer, with more competition for the player emerging.

United have already been active in the summer market. The club have completed the £62 million signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and are working on a deal to bring Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo to the club.

Another player to be heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer is Gyokeres. The latest reports claim that the club have made contact over a deal which would see the striker reunited with former manager Ruben Amorim.

The Sweden international has caught the eye with his goal-scoring exploits this season, netting 39 goals and provided eight assists in 33 league appearances. United are keen on strengthening their forward options this summer.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap was their main target in the area. However, he completed a move to Chelsea last week, meaning that United now have to move on to other options.

If United decide to make a move for Gyokeres, then they are expected to face competition from other clubs. Arsenal have been linked with an interest in the striker.

FootMercato now report that Gyokeres is a ‘priority target’ for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal. The report says that the striker is ‘actively followed’ by the club.

Their interest comes just after Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, who has also been linked with United, reportedly turned down a move to the club. It was reported over the weekend that Al-Hilal has scheduled a medical after a £63 million deal was agreed, but the player rejected the move despite a lucrative deal being on the table.

It leaves Al-Hilal now looking for an alternative option with the club dreaming of signing a world class striker this summer. Gyokeres has emerged as a target. Despite reports that Sporting would be willing to sanction a deal for around €60 million (£50.5m), this latest report claims that they will not budge from his €100 million (£84.2m) release clause, which could explain why some suitors are looking elsewhere.

But that is not putting Al-Hilal off. The club are reported to be eager to back new manager Simone Inzaghi in the summer transfer window following his move from Inter Milan.

United have also been linked with Osimhen. But ESPN recently reported that United do not see the Nigerian as being the right fit for Ruben Amorim's forward line.
