Spurs aim to hijack Man United’s move for £50 million star

Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new manager goes on following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou earlier this month.

The Australian was dismissed just two weeks after guiding the Lilywhites to Europa League glory, becoming just the third manager in the club’s history to win a European trophy.

Despite beating Manchester United 1-0 in the Europa League final in Bilbao, Spurs’ dismal Premier League performances prompted chairman Daniel Levy to dismiss the ex-Celtic boss.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the current favourite to succeed Postecoglou, and it appears that the Dane could also attempt to bring one of the Bees’ most important players with him if he does make the move across the capital.

According to CaughtOffside, Tottenham are set to attempt to hijack Manchester United’s pursuit of forward Bryan Mbeumo.

The Red Devils had an initial offer of around £45 million for the player rejected by Brentford, and the report claims that they have since responded with a second bid.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have been in contact and could attempt to lure the player to North London instead of Manchester.

Mbeumo, 25, joined the Bees from French side Troyes in 2019 and has since played more than 240 times for the West London outfit across all competitions.

He has scored 70 goals in that time, as well as providing 51 assists for Frank’s side.

Last term, the forward scored 20 times in 38 Premier League games for Brentford, as well as registering eight assists in the competition.

It is claimed that, while a move to Old Trafford remains Mbeumo’s preference at present, Tottenham could attempt to hijack the move especially if Frank is appointed as Postecoglou’s successor.

The Cameroon international is currently contracted to Brentford until the end of next season, which could impact the London side’s valuation of the player.
