Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes dropped spine-tingling praise for one of his Portugal teammates after Roberto Martinez’s men beat Spain in the Nations League final.

Bruno Fernandes represented Manchester United on their post-season tour of Asia in May before he linked up with Portugal for international duty this summer.

Diogo Dalot was also called up alongside United teammate Fernandes and Red Devils legend Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal’s Nations League campaign.

Portugal reached the final of the Nations League after Roberto Martinez’s side defeated Germany 2-1 in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena last Wednesday.

Spain punched their ticket to the 2025 Nations League final last Thursday, with the Euro 2024 champions defeating France 5-4 in a thrilling semi-final encounter.

The final was held at the Allianz Arena in Munich and Portugal ensured their status as Nations League champions after beating Spain on penalties on Sunday.

Spain took the lead over Portugal after Martin Zubimendi opened the scoring in the first half before Nuno Mendes pulled his side back into the final five minutes later.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and cancelled out Mikel Oyarzabal’s strike after he found the all-important equaliser in the 61st minute for Portugal on Sunday evening.

The Nations League final was forced to extra time after the 2-2 scoreline in regular playing time before Portugal and Spain settled the match on penalties.

All five of Portugal’s penalty takers converted from the spot-kick, while Alvaro Morata missed his effort for Spain and Portugal sealed a 5-3 win on penalties.

Joao Neves shared on Instagram Stories after the match a photo of him alongside Bruno Fernandes, with the pair both holding the Nations League trophy.

Fernandes reshared the post on his Instagram Stories and he wrote the message of “Menino de ouro,” which translates to ‘Golden boy’ from Portuguese to English.

What is next for Man Utd duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot after Portugal’s Nations League final triumph against Spain?

Portugal’s international campaign is now over and both Fernandes and Diogo Dalot are now expected to return to Old Trafford ahead of the pre-season campaign.

Dalot was an unused substitute for the Nations League final, while Fernandes played the full 120 minutes and scored one of Portugal’s five penalties in the shootout.

Ruben Amorim has been overseeing the start of his Manchester United first-team squad overhaul after the end of the 2024-25 campaign and the post-season tour.

United will begin their pre-season campaign this summer on 19th July, with the Red Devils facing rivals Leeds United at the Strawberry Arena in Sweden.
