Despite opting against making Jadon Sancho's loan move permanent, Chelsea could still play a pivotal role in the Manchester United winger's future.
The Blues chose to fork out £5million to United as a way of avoiding a permanent deal for Sancho after failing to reach an agreement with the 25-year-old. As Chelsea explore other options to bolster their wing, one potential signing could indirectly affect Sancho's fate.
The west London club is among those vying for the signature of Borussia Dortmund sensation Jamie Gittens. The 20-year-old is reportedly already on board with the idea of a seven-year contract with Enzo Maresca's side, who are now working on convincing Dortmund to sanction the move.
In their haste to wrap up the deal before the FIFA Club World Cup, Chelsea put forward a bid of £29.5million – only for Dortmund knock back the offer with reported demands of upwards of £42m, as per Sky Germany.
Gittens, who netted 12 goals and provided five assists last season, made a splash in the early stages of the Champions League by scoring four times in the first five matches. However, the former Manchester City youth player still has three years left on his contract at Dortmund, along with a £50m release clause, so the Bundesliga outfit are in no great rush to sell.
If Chelsea are able to negotiate a deal and Gittens does leave, Dortmund will need a replacement, which could open the door for Sancho to return to the Westfalenstadion for a third stint, reports the Mirror.
Sancho initially moved from Dortmund to Old Trafford in a £73m deal and was loaned back to the German club in January 2024 following a fallout with Erik ten Hag. His prospects at United appear bleak.
Dortmund have expressed their interest in staying informed about any developments regarding Sancho's future, with reports suggesting they're among several European outfits considering a move. The player's wages may pose a hurdle to United in their bid to offload him; consequently, another loan deal is being contemplated.

Sancho played a pivotal role in Chelsea clinching the UEFA Conference League title and booking their spot in the Champions League this season, clocking up 45 appearances. However, his output of five goals and 10 assists indicates a stable if unspectacular campaign.
Before Dortmund make a potential play for Sancho, a departure for Gittens appears necessary.
The German heavyweights are also on the cusp of snapping up Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland in a £31m five-year deal. The 19-year-old midfielder is set to see a medical in Dortmund on Monday.
Sebastian Kehl, Dortmund's Sporting Director, has acknowledged the interest in Gittens while signalling the club's intention to trim the wage bill.
He said: "There's definitely a market for him [Gittens]. He's a very exciting player. We'll be having discussions soon. If offers come in, we'll have to deal with them."
He added: "We want to reduce wages. That said, it's possible we'll continue with some of these players. But some may no longer be part of the BVB squad next season."
