Harvey Elliott may have lifted the Premier League trophy, but the ongoing Florian Wirtz transfer talks could decide his Liverpool future.
Injury Setback and Missed Chances Hurt Harvey Elliott
Harvey Elliott’s 2024/25 season hasn’t gone the way he hoped. That is despite being part of **Liverpool**’s title-winning squad. The 22-year-old midfielder has looked set for a breakthrough under new manager Arne Slot. That is especially with the Dutch coach favoring a 4-2-3-1 system. There, he could have played in as the No. 10. But an early injury saw him sidelined for months, returning only in December.
During his absence, Dominik Szoboszlai made the most of his chances in the role. Although, Harvey showed flashes of brilliance in cup games. That includes a goal against Southampton and key contributions against Lille and Brentford. But, he was never quite able to be a regular in the starting XI. His limited starts and reduced involvement showed that he remained on the fringes throughout most of the campaign.
Wirtz Deal May Seal Elliott’s Anfield Exit
Reds are now pushing hard to sign German star Florian Wirtz. This could be a club-record move. So, Elliott’s spot in the squad is looking even more uncertain. Slot publicly praised the youngster’s strong finish to the season and admitted Elliott had deserved more minutes. But the reality is harsh, should Wirtz arrive, the Englishman could likely be getting limited game time.
Elliott had a strong showing late in the season. That also includes a goal and assist against Brighton after the title was wrapped up. He knows he’ll need a huge pre-season to stay in the mix.
If he can’t convince Slot in the coming weeks, a loan or permanent move is imminent. That may be the only way for him to play regularly. As things stand, the decision seems to be slipping out of his hands.
