Michael Antonio’s future at West Ham remains uncertain.

The 35-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the season and there has been no decision on an extension, despite his admission that he wants to stay.

The matter is a difficult one, as the Jamaica star suffered horrendous injuries in a car crash in December, which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

The Hammers star has returned to light training after surgery on a broken leg, but it remains to be seen what kind of impact it will leave.

The statement also included an update on Antonio, which stated that there will be no decision or announcement until it is the right time.

Mail Sport journalist James Sharpe claimed (9 June) that the veteran has been offered a short-term deal but he is holding out for potentially better offers.

West Ham face a tough Antonio decision

Antonio’s exploits since moving to East London have been nothing short of legendary, he is the Irons’ top goalscorer in the Premier League.

While Graham Potter‘s side are in need of a major rebuild and getting the former Nottingham Forest man’s reported £90,000-a-week wages off the books would be a huge help, it would not be right.

Iconic commentator Ian Darke told West Ham Zone that the Hammers may make a “ruthless” decision on their iconic player but that would leave a sour taste for supporters.

Some fans feel that he should be given a new deal no matter what after everything that he has been through and that would be a great move.

He deserves an extra year, a proper send-off, in front of the supporters rather than one where he does not get to say goodbye, even if he may not be the same player when he returns from his injuries.

It may be viewed as a sentimental decision rather than a sporting one but ultimately the E20 club owe Antonio after all that he done on the pitch over the years.
