Man Utd need to make a statement of intent this summer and one blockbuster signing could be Gianluigi Donnarumma.
There was a time, in the not so distant past, when Manchester United could blow all but Real Madrid out of the water when it came to competing for players.
It is a level that the club needs to get back to again with a very real danger that both Liverpool and Manchester City are starting to pull years ahead in terms of being able to compete for the Premier League title again. If Ruben Amorim is to be a success at United, he needs to be given the right tools to succeed.
If United want to get back to that level quickly, the recruitment team should be targeting players who would walk into the top teams in Europe and few have as big a claim as Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Man Utd considering move for Gianluigi Donnarumma
The giant Italian has been around a long time having broken into AC Milan’s starting XI at just 16-years old, there have been a few dips along the way, but he is now a Champions League winner and a serious contender to be the best between the sticks in the world.
The 26-year old was pivotal in Italy’s 2020 European Championships win in 2021 and has now cemented his place as a true great of the game with a series of stunning performances throughout the knockout stages of the Champions League.
That the list of teams linked includes Real Madrid and Man City when they already have world class keepers tells its own story of how highly rated the 6ft 5inch keeper is. The £33m fee due to his contract expiring in 2026 being seems to be attracting teams who could secure their No.1 for the next 10 years if PSG are willing to sell.
Every successful team has a top goalkeeper and United teams throughout history have been no different. Signing Donnarumma wouldn’t just be an immediate upgrade and improve the defence overnight, it would be a real statement of intent. There is a reason why he was linked as a replacement for David de Gea.
Donnarumma’s agent reveals what club can’t afford the Italian’s services
United have “positioned themselves” to sign Donnarumma according to L’Equipe, however, there is one club that he won’t be going to: "It's pure fantasy. I've an excellent relationship with Director Giovanni Manna at [Napoli], but we've never discussed Gigio," his agent stated to Radio CRC, as reported by Calciomercato Napoli.
"It's an obvious question. Many would like him, but only a few can afford him. He feels good in Paris, we're at the European champion club, so we have no complaints. We are working on a renewal [with PSG]."
“His mother is a huge Napoli fan, and she gets anxious watching their games. Gigio is connected to that," he added
"He grew up as a Milan supporter, watching his older brothers in a Rossoneri shirt, but he never denied his roots. In fact, his first stop during the holidays is always Castellammare.".
