Liverpool midfield star Harvey Elliott admits his future at Anfield is in the air this summer, amid transfer interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies have been linked with a move for the England Under-21 star as Eddie Howe looks to refresh his squad for the coming season.

United have six strong midfield options, but may need reinforcements in the window should the likes of Sean Longstaff or Joe Willock leave the club.

Academy graduate Longstaff has been the subject of interest from Leeds United and Everton, after finding first-team chances hard to come by in 2025.

Any midfield departures will likely need replacing, with Howe keen to have two players for every position, particularly ahead of what will be a long season.

Newcastle will play at least eight Champions League group games in the coming campaign, while they will want to ensure European demands do not hamper their bid to challenge at the top end of the Premier League again.

Elliott has struggled to pin down a place in the Liverpool side under Arne Slot, and has seen the Reds lay out ambitious transfer plans this summer, which would further hamper his chances of first-team football.

The midfielder is part of the England Under-21 squad for this forthcoming U21 EUROS, and could fit the bill in terms of Premier League experience should United decide to follow up any interest.

Still just 22, Elliott has made 147 appearances for the Reds since signing from Fulham in 2019, and will be familiar to the likes of Anthony Gordon, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento at international level.

Had been considered as a makeweight as part of Liverpool's bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz, but has admitted that will have to assess his future in the coming weeks, with an Anfield departure on the cards.

"I don't really want to be wasting years of my career because it's a short career," he said. "You don't know what's going to happen.

"I need to reflect. I need to see if I'm content in doing what I'm doing and how can I improve as a player because that's the most important thing.

"I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself. If that's to go somewhere else, then it's a decision that I'm going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.

"Nothing makes me want to leave. I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well. But most importantly, it's just about what's best for my career."

Liverpool are thought to want around £40m for Elliott, which could prove a stumbling block for Newcastle. The Magpies have been linked with big moves for Brighton's Joao Pedro and Anthony Elanga of Nottingham Forest, while still hold a strong interest in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
