_"We like the idea of bringing back Chubb to go with Ford and at least one of the top backs in the draft, which there should be impact players still available like Henderson, Judkins, Skattebo, Allen, among others, on the second or third day of the NFL Draft. Ford has shown that he can be the lead back, but a high upside rookie back can compete for playing time immediately in the rotation. If Chubb returns close to his former self, the Browns will have a strong running back room."_
Even with the two drafted rookies, there still would have been room on the roster for Ford and Chubb, even though Chubb does not play special teams. As it stands now, **[Pierre Strong](https://247sports.com/Player/pierre-strong-88873/)** will likely be the fourth back and the Browns could have kept him on the practice squad for special teams purposes, if they would have chosen that route.
Ford is in the final year of his rookie contract and he took a pay cut to remain with the Browns, likely signaling the end of Chubb's tenure with the Browns. The reports are that Chubb is signing a one-year contract, but it will be interesting to see what amount of money that Chubb signed for.
If the contract is reasonable, it seems logical the Browns would be stronger with Chubb over Strong on the roster.
Obviously, the Browns did not want Chubb to be the fourth running back or be in a position to have to cut him.
However, the Browns could have gotten a much needed public relations win this offseason with the fan base, bringing back one of the most beloved players in the Browns recent history. Bringing back Chubb with a low-risk, high-upside move would have made sense.
If Chubb returns close to being the former Pro Bowl running back at close to or above five yards a carry in his second year post-knee surgery, the Browns would have been on their way to have a great running game, while also protecting themselves going forward with two young, promising backs. Chubb would have been the best role model and examples for rookies Judkins and Sampson.
If reports are true that Chubb will join the Texans, it is the end of an era and the Browns will not look good if Chubb returns anywhere close to his former Pro Bowl level.
Only time will tell if it was the right decision.
