Green Bay Packers release veteran before minicamp after he refuses to submit to demands

A veteran on the Green Bay Packers was set to make his return to the team’s facility this week for mandatory minicamp after being present only for the virtual portion of OTAs this spring. The Packers plan to designate him as a post-June 1 cut before minicamp begins.

Per Matt Scheidman of The Athletic, the Packers offered cornerback Jaire Alexander a restructured deal in May. The cornerback and his agent never agreed to the new deal, and it’s unclear if Green Bay required Alexander to take a pay cut as part of the deal.

On Monday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the Packers plan to release Alexander.

“ThePackers and Jaire Alexander agreed to explore a potential trade this spring, while a restructured contract was also discussed,” Rapoport posted on X. “In the end, Green Bay and Alexander move on with a clean break.”

Brian Gutekunst wanted something in return for Jaire Alexander

In February, general manager Brian Gutekunst wanted to receive as much as possible in return for investing in the 2018 first-round pick. Alexander earned two Pro Bowl appearances and was named an All-Pro twice during his time in Green Bay.

When on the field, Alexander was a force for the Packers’ defense. Unfortunately, back and knee injuries kept him from being on the field enough for Green Bay’s front office. He started and appeared in 14 games in the last two seasons.
