It has been years since Washington sports has seen a collection of coaches as great as they currently have on the scene.
Commanders head coach Dan Quinn helped turn around his NFL club. In 2024, the team won 12 games and reached the conference championship game for the first time in 30 years.
He wasn't the only one who saw major improvement from his team, though.
Spencer Carbery, head coach of the Washington Capitals, was named the 2025 Jack Adams Award winner, recognizing him as the NHL’s Coach of the Year. After failing to make the playoffs in 2022, Carbery has built the Caps into a perennial Stanley Cup Playoff team.
In 2024, Carbery led the Capitals to the most wins in the Eastern Conference. He was clearly deserving of the Jack Adams Trophy this season.
In celebration, Quinn sent a video note shortly after the announcement was made.
"Hey Spencer — DQ here, man,” Quinn said in a message. “Just wanted to say congrats on the Jack Adams Award, man. Coach of the Year, that’s a big deal. We’re all pumped for you, bro. Keep it rocking.”
Not since Joe Gibbs have the Commanders had a coaching staff that has brought across-the-board respect to Washington's football franchise. "DQ'' is on that path now - or at least that's what the fans dream of.
The hope is that the rest of their sports will fall in line sooner rather than later.
For the time being, though, Carbery and Quinn are the head coaches are leaders of the two top teams in the D.C. area. And with the way both teams have been built, it doesn't look like their titles will be changing anytime soon.
