Harvey Elliott has warned Liverpool that he does not want to waste the prime yerars of his career on the bench and will leave the club if he needs to.

The 23-year-old has now been at the club for six years and in that time, he has lifted the Premier League, the EFL Cup (twice), the FA Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

And so his frustration and sense of being left out are very understandable.

In Jurgen Klopp’s final season at Liverpool, Elliott was not a starter by any means but he still played 2,786 minutes for the German manager, including over 1,300 minutes in the Premier League.

That level of trust yielded three goals and nine assists in the league but since Arne Slot joined the club, Elliott has found himself on the fringes of the squad.

Elliott played just 822 minutes total this season and managed just one goal and two assists in the league.

And it’s clear that he will become further isolated from playing time with the imminent arrival of German super-talent Florian Wirtz, who Liverpool are set to break the Premier League transfer record to sign.

Elliott rarely talks about himself in the press but rather has shown a trend of talking up his teammates and remaining humble so his comments now are clearly a reflection of how much this season’s lack of minutes affected him.

“It’s just a situation that me and the team on my behalf have to have a conversation about, because I’m coming to an age now where I’m 22, I’m going to be 23 next season, and I don’t really want to be wasting years of my career, because it’s a short career,” Elliott said.

“I just want to improve and be the best possible version of myself and the best player I can be.

“If that’s to go somewhere else, then it’s a decision I’m going to have to make and I just need to see what happens.”

While Elliott is seemingly prepared to make a career decision if he has to, it’s also just as clear how much he loves Liverpool FC, the fans and the city.

He added: “Nothing makes me want to leave,’ Elliott said. ‘I love the club, I love the fans, the team. I support them as well.

‘But as I said, most importantly, it’s about what’s best for my career. I just need to make that decision.”

A report from Football Insider in April suggested Liverpool are prepared to sell Elliott if the right offer comes in with a £50m valuation set for one of the best young English talents.

More recently – in early May – a report from GiveMeSport underlinerd serious interest in Elliott from Wolves, who have now signed Matheus Cunha for a fee in the region of £62.5m.
