Marseille and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot believes that Mason Greenwood could have had a comparable career to Real Madrid sensation Jude Bellingham by now.

The winger left United last summer after being suspended by the club in January 2022 amid allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. All charges were later dropped and the winger would join Getafe on loan on deadline day in the summer of 2023.

His permanent move to Marseille in 2024 saw United include a substantial sell-on fee which perhaps indicated how highly the club rated him. However, after a prolonged consultation period, it was decided that Greenwood would not be able to continue in Manchester.

In his first season at Marseille, Greenwood has bagged 22 goals in all competitions and he has impressed fellow new arrival on the south coast of France, Rabiot. Speaking to The Athletic about his teammate, the 30-year-old said: "Mason is an incredible player.

"If he hadn’t had all of his problems, I think he’d have an image like (Jude) Bellingham. Mason would be the star.

"Because he’s an exceptional player. He can score with his right foot and his left foot, he has an exceptional shot, he can dribble.

"We’re very lucky to have him. When he’s really focused, he does really great things."

While Greenwood has been informed that he has little chance of representing England again, Bellingham has become the poster boy of the Three Lions' squad. At 21, two years younger than the ex-United winger, Bellingham has won the Champions League, La Liga and numerous individual trophies too.

It is understood that former United assistant Steve McClaren is working hard to switch Greenwood's allegiance from English to Jamaican ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States. At the time of writing, that switch has not been officially confirmed.
