Lazio reject €30m bid for former Gunner with sell-on clause

Lazio have rejected a €30m bid from Al-Hilal for Nuno Tavares, with Arsenal due to profit if the Serie A club opt to sell the former Gunner.

Alfredo Pedulla reports that Lazio have rejected a bid of around €30m (£25.3m) for Nuno Tavares, comprised of a €25m (£21.1m) guaranteed fee plus bonuses.

Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal were the bidders, but their offer was deemed unconvincing and quickly turned down.

Pedulla writes that Tavares has also received other enquiries in recent days, but Lazio don’t currently intend to consider offers for him. The Serie A club only recently made Tavares’ loan move from Arsenal permanent.

There’s been some debate about the exact terms of Tavares’ transfer from Arsenal to Lazio. Gary Jacob reported for The Times last week that the deal was worth around £7.9m, but Simon Collings of The Standard put it at between £6-7m.

All sources agree that there’s a sell-on clause in Tavares’ contract with Lazio, but the exact value of the clause has varied in different reports between 25% and 40%.

Regardless of the exact figures, it’s clear that Arsenal would profit if Lazio decided to sell Tavares this summer.

Even using the lowest reported transfer fee of £6m and sell-on clause of 25%, another transfer in the region of £25m would earn Arsenal an extra £6.25m for a minimum total of £12.25m.

That would be a decent profit on the fee of under £7m that the Gunners paid to sign Tavares in the first place. It just requires Lazio to first accept one of the offers they receive.

Tavares played 30 times and provided nine assists for Lazio in 2024/25, but he had significant problems with injuries. The left-back suffered at least six muscular injury setbacks, and only returned to action two games before the end of the season.
