Winners and losers from Thierno Barry’s transfer to Everton as £30m dilemma emerges - opinion

Everton are getting increasingly closer to making Thierno Barry a part of The Friedkin Group’s exciting project.

The Villareal striker has appeared on David Moyes’ radar this summer, with a £33m release clause looking to be activated.

Everton know a striker is desperately needed after a lack of goals cost the Toffees in another underwhelming season.

Moyes’ arrival changed their fortunes slightly, but the overpowering factor is that goals were still a struggle.

This brings attention to the 22-year-old who is firmly in Moyes’ plans, and the real winners and losers come out if this transfer happens.

The winners at Everton if Thierno Barry signs this summer

David Moyes

Despite the heavy interest, it’s become apparent Barry wouldn’t be opposed to staying, but judging by Everton fans’ reaction to Barry, The Friedkins have to push for him.

Moyes will be at the heart of this, and if his work lands the Frenchman, who has scored 11 goals this season, fans will be impressed.

Adding to this, Moyes checks off a striker, which is a ‘priority’ this summer.

Dwight McNeil

It can be said that Dwight McNeil is arguably Everton’s most creative player, and will want a striker he can rely on to finish off the chances he creates, especially after creating 37 this season.

Despite Beto’s resurgence, it’s not the same as what Barry could bring, who was lethal in Spain this year as a poacher.

McNeil has been known to be a ‘difference’ for Everton, and with the winger grabbing assists from Barry and the Frenchman scoring, both parties are happy.

The Friedkin Group

The ownership still has a point to prove this window, and with a budget up to £100m, they can do exactly that.

With the hope being that they can achieve Moyes’ wishes, getting a striker would keep the manager happy, but the fans would be ecstatic by the 22-year-old’s arrival.

Barry’s arrival will be the first real statement signing from The Friedkins, with Everton fans increasing their belief in the project at hand.

The losers at Everton if Barry signs this summer

Beto

The second half of the season has been very good to Beto and has been his best spell since his £30m move.

Moyes has managed to transform the striker, and the 27-year-old has earned his place in the squad, but potentially not in a starting spot if Barry signs.

Despite staking his claim to Moyes for the starting role, Everton fans saw shades of ‘old’ Beto, potentially meaning he can’t be relied upon due to his inconsistency, and the Scotsman signing Barry will send a message to Beto.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin

If Barry signs, Dominic Calvert-Lewin will no doubt be on his way out.

This already looks likely as it stands with Calvert-Lewin not agreeing on contract terms, but the coming days will be telling if this happens.

Ultimately, Barry will be the new face of the Toffees up front, and Calvert-Lewin, who once had that crown, won’t settle for a back-up role.

Youssef Chermiti

A player who has promise but just hasn’t been able to make his mark is Youssef Chermiti.

The 21-year-old has made just four appearances during Moyes’ second spell, and if Barry signs, it puts him further down the pecking order.

However, Barry’s signing shouldn’t be the end of the Portuguese’s tenure as Chermiti has shades of Romelu Lukaku, and a loan move would suffice.
