Report: Packers dropping Jaire Alexander; Murphy calls injuries unfortunate

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Packers were apparently unable to find a team willing to pay the right price or agree to a restructured contract with star cornerback Jaire Alexander.

According to Cover 2 contributor and ESPN beat reporter Rob Demovsky, Alexander was informed by the Packers that he was being released on Monday.

> After an entire offseason of trying to find a common ground, the Packers are indeed releasing Jaire Alexander, a source said.

The cornerback was set to report to Packers mandatory minicamp which gets underway this week.

Action 2 Sports director Dave Schroeder was able to ask Mark Murphy about the move during the Children’s Wisconsin golf outing Monday.

“He’s been a great player for us. Obviously an elite talent, and unfortunately just injured a lot,” the Packers president/CEO said. “Unfortunately, that’s a big part of our game.”

Back in February, we reported the Packers were having trade conversations about Alexander.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the Packers were “open to moving him for the right price.”

Green Bay also considered keeping Alexander after being unable to facilitate a trade through the draft. They even offered a restructured contract to Alexander but were unable to strike a deal, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Injuries in the end hampered the final years of Alexander’s time in Green Bay.

The former All-Pro cornerback suffered a knee injury late in the week 8 win in Jacksonville last season. He would return two weeks later against the Bears before exiting before halftime.

Alexander practiced on a semi-regular basis in the following weeks but continued to miss games, eventually having surgery on his knee and landing on injured reserve.

Between injuries and a one-game suspension for crashing the coin toss at Carolina in 2023, Alexander missed 14 games over the last two seasons.

In 2022, the Packers signed Alexander to a four-year, $84 million extension that included a record signing bonus for a defensive back -- $30 million -- and made him the highest-paid cornerback in the league.

Releasing Alexander will free up $17.1 million in cap space of this season, according to Over the Cap.
