Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has been in the NFL since 2018. During that time, he has had nine different offensive coordinators/play-callers to work with.
That includes stops with the Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Rams.
Eight coordinators in seven seasons. Insanity.
He is about to work with his ninth on that list. With Liam Coen taking the head coaching job in Jacksonville, Josh Grizzard has been promoted to play-caller and offensive coordinator in Tampa Bay.
With Grizzard having already been in the organization, there's reason to suspect there won't be many changes with Tampa Bay's offense. That may not be the case, though.
During OTAs, Mayfield detailed the differences between Grizzard and Coen as play-callers.
"Liam and I were close in L.A., and he was great for me last year," Mayfield said via CBS Sports reporter Pete Prisco. "Griz has his own tweaks on it. He's handled it well. Things aren't just going to transfer from one season to the next. Nothing we did last year matters. The foundation is there."
There's good reason to believe that Mayfield won't miss a beat with Grizzard. Tampa Bay's offense is among the most talented in the league, with a future Pro Football Hall of Famer in Mike Evans and a 1,000-yard rusher in Bucky Irving.
If Grizzard can keep Tampa Bay's offense humming, the Buccaneers could be set to win their fifth straight division title. And potentially show that while he hasn't had stability in his play-caller, Mayfield can work well in any system.
