Man Utd looked close to sealing a deal for Brian Mbuemo but have been dealt a blow in their hopes of a quick transfer.

Manchester United have moved quickly to strengthen their forward line with Brian Mbuemo seemingly on his way to add even more quality to an attack that was often found lacking.

Matheus Cunha has been signed already, with Mbuemo also in talks about moving up north and helping to lead a red revolution. Mbuemo has been reported to want the move to Old Trafford but the deal has now stalled thanks to Tottenham Hotspur’s sacking of Ange Postecoglu and Brentford boss Thomas Frank emerging as favourite to replace him.

It is a sizeable spanner in the works for Ruben Amorim who wants the Red Devils’ transfer work completed as soon as possible.

Frank is a huge fan of Mbuemo and the 25-year old would get his dream of playing for a bigger club and in the Champions League but without changing manager.

There is good news from Fabrizio Romano though, with the transfer supremo claiming that Mbuemo is sitting by the phone via his GiveMeSport newsletter: "Mbeumo is waiting for Man United as a priority. Thomas Frank is close to Spurs so we will see what happens if he joins; but Mbeumo at the moment is waiting to see what happens with United."

Man Utd could play Brian Mbuemo in a different position to star role at Brentford

Footballers are a fickle bunch and it could be that Spurs decision to sack Postecoglu means that United don’t get one of their top targets.

One of the questions faced by Mbuemo’s links to United has been what position the Cameroon international would play in but Michah Richards, on The Rest is Football podcast has an alternative suggestion:

“I really like to see if Man Utd do get Mbuemo. He's a really good player,” said Richards. “Cunha is a really (good player too)...It's just where they're going to play him and Mbuemo. He could play one of the 10s, but he could also play wing back.

“He (Mbuemo) actually has played wing back before, but it looks exciting. And I'm glad it's been doing early. I hate when they have to wait and wait and wait. And I think now everyone wants there players in, especially a club like Man United with this new system. And obviously they're still trying to learn what it is.

“The earlier you can get everyone in, soon as preseason starts, everyone's ready to go. And they can work out exactly how they want to play.”

Why Man Utd are up against it if Frank goes to Spurs

Mbuemo has already given a fascinating insight into his character and, if he signed for Spurs, he would be able to maintain a relationship that has seen him produce the form of his career:

"Every little thing you can add to what we do in the training ground can help," Mbeumo, 25, told BBC Sport ahead of the Bees' final game of the campaign.

"I tried to arrange everything around my life to be the best as possible on the pitch. Consistency is really important. If you want to have big ambitions you need to perform the whole season.

"I think I am still improving every day I put a foot on the pitch. I never put limits on myself. I get angry really easy. He [Yoane Wissa] helped me to just stay cool.

"I learned a lot from [former Brentford players] Julian Jeanvier and Said Benrahma who helped me before so I wanted to do the same with him because I think it is hard when you leave your first place and go to another country. I used to live really close to him (Wissa), just one minute away. Sometimes I was joining him at his, having dinners."

It was a deal that looked signed and sealed, however, the latest twist could see this one become the sort of saga that Amorim would have wanted to avoid.
